Join us on Saturday, September 25, for a big workparty in Mission Hills Canyon to remove trash and invasive plants to prepare the Canyon for native plant restoration. We will be cutting and removing Arundo (also known as giant reed), an aggressively invasive non-native plant that causes many problems for the canyon environment. The area has also been used repeatedly as a homeless encampment, so we will be taking out some trash as well. In previous work parties, we have made great progress in ridding the area of these pesky plants, and had a good time working together as neighbors!
The Coastal Cleanup Day is a semi-annual event that attracts some 10,000 volunteers County-wide to clean up coastal, creek, and watershed sites. We need only 40 volunteers to get the job done at our site, and we hope that most will be neighbors from the Mission Hills area. To do this, YOU MUST REGISTER on the Coastal Cleanup Site:www.cleanupday.org/cleanupsites.htm. Go to Zone 3, and scroll down to Mission Hills/Mission Hills Canyon: Site Details.
Registration opens Monday,August 16. Please register early so that you do not miss your place (but do not register unless you are definitely coming, since other volunteers seeking our site will be directed elsewhere if all 40 spaces are taken). If you love your local canyons, this is the perfect opportunity to help improve one for wildlife and the enjoyment of all!
The work will involve cutting the plants and hauling them a short distance to the disposal area. Find other important details on the Registration Site.
