MH BBQ Competition

The Mission Hills Town Council
Presents the 1st Annual Mission Hills BBQ Competition
During the 4th of July Celebration in Pioneer Park
Are you the grill master of your block? Are your BBQ parties the event of the summer? If you regularly smell like BBQ smoke and want to become the Pit Master of Mission Hills (at least for a year), then enter the 1st Annual Mission Hills BBQ Competition. We are working on some great prizes and a trophy worthy of being passed on year after year - your name emblazoned on it for generations of Mission Hills residents to see. Also, Phil, from Phil's BBQ, will be one of the judges - how cool is that?! Completed entry form and fee due by June 12th!GENERAL GUIDELINES
- An entry fee of $50 will be collected from each team to enter this contest. You must be a member of the Mission Hills Town Council to enter. A maximum of three people can comprise a team. The contest is limited to 5 teams.
- BBQ Contest entries are limited to Bone-in Boston Butts1, to be provided by the Mission Hills Town Council 48 hours before the competition. You will be required to cook six Pork Butts2.
- Contestants may season or prepare the meat as the contestant sees fit, but any sauce must be homemade. Meats that are boiled (only) or fried (only) will not be accepted.
- Cooking can only be done on a charcoal, gas, wood or wood pellet fired device.
- The BBQ Contestant is responsible for observing accepted and prudent temperature and sanitary requirements.
BBQ JUDGING AND PRIZES
- BBQ Contest blind judging containers will be delivered to each participant at the team’s cook site.
- Anything placed in the container that identifies your team will cause your entry to not be scored. Cut your entries such that each judge will have their own portion. Provide sufficient samples for judging by 5 judges.
- The remaining BBQ will be for the enjoyment of Mission Hills Town Council members, to be served as pulled pork sandwiches. Buns and serving equipment will be provided by the Mission Hills Town Council.
- All samples must be provided to the judges by 11:30 AM on July 4th, 2011.
- BBQ Contest entries will be judged in one single round only. Prizes will be awarded to the first three places.
- Entries will be scored for Taste, Tenderness and Appearance.
Concerned about how your going to smoke six Boston Butts in time for 11:30am judging and consumption? For those that are going to smoke their butts for possibly 12 hours, we understand if you don't want to be smokin' pork at 2am in an old cemetery and also don't want to move a hot smoker mid-cook from the cozy confines of your house to the park. Some ideas for you: team up with a fellow BBQer and start the butts on one team member's gear, then transfer them to your setup in the park in the morning. Or you could start them on your setup at home, then do some time in the oven while your gear cools down so you can transfer it to the park to finish it off. Still have concerns, but are dying to compete? Have other questions, but are interested? Submit an entry form and we'll talk!
