Here is the latest update on the Mission Hills Vons Project.

New Mission Hills Vons

Vons store to close on 4/15/11

The Vons Mission Hills grocery store, located at the intersection of Washington and Dove Streets, will take its first steps toward redevelopment with the closing of the existing store on Friday, April 15, 2011. Vons - owned by Safeway, Inc. - has been serving the Mission Hills and Hillcrest communities at this location since 1962. Approval of plans to replace the existing store with a brand new, state-of-the-art grocery store is the culmination of years of effort on the part of Vons and the community. Vons worked closely with the community throughout the approval process for the new store. Numerous meetings were conducted with the Uptown Planners, Mission Hills Town Council and other interested groups to ensure that concerns about the new project were addressed. The project was approved with a unanimous vote of the San Diego City Council in November 2010.

Demolition to make way for new Vons store

Demolition of the existing store will begin on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 and is anticipated to take approximately six weeks. The new Vons store will provide more than 55,000 square feet of space – nearly three times the size of the existing store and will offer a full array of service departments, including bakery, deli, floral, meat and seafood, as well as expanded produce with organic offerings.

Groundbreaking on new store in mid-June

Construction groundbreaking for the new store will occur in mid-June and will be commemorated with a groundbreaking ceremony. Construction is anticipated to last approximately nine months.
