Mission Hills Annual Garden Walk

Garden WalkThe Mission Hills Garden Club's 12th Annual Garden Walk was truly a "walk to remember" as their marketing materials professed.  It was held on a beautiful sunny Saturday in Bankers Hill this year.  I heard there were over a thousand people enjoying the walk this year with access to some of the most spectacular properties Bankers Hill has to offer.  The tour celebrated Kate Session's influential work in the neighborhood as well as the 100th anniversary of the nursery she founded, Mission Hills Nursery.   Throughout the walk there were musicians, artists, and food available.  A trolley service shuttled people between Mission Hills Nursery and Bankers Hill and the tour was a walkable route including a trip across the Spruce Street Suspension Bridge.
Twelve gardens were featured including expansive canyon lots.  Many of the properties had surprises around every corner as they wound down the canyon slopes or through hidden courtyards.  The annual walk is the club's biggest revenue source which goes to funding their many wonderful projects around the neighborhood. Not only was it a chance to see some of San Diego's best private gardens, but the garden club also provided a handy guide detailing the history of the homes and highlighting some of the special plants found in the gardens. If you are planning a landscape redesign or just looking for some interesting plant ideas, the annual walk is a source of inspiration. One of my favorite vendors of the day was "The Grateful Shed" - Don & Laura Starr were selling hand-made wooden boxes overflowing with beautiful succulents. You can see some examples of their work in the photo gallery. If you missed the walk this year, you can browse our photo gallery below of the event and be sure to look out for next year's!
