Attention Arts & Crafts architecture fans!
Many residents of Mission Hills and fans of the Arts and Crafts movement will want to visit the San Diego Museum of Art for it’s latest exhibit: Gustav Stickley and the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Known for his architectural and furniture designs and for his magazine The Craftsman, Stickely is widely considered the father of the Arts and Crafts philosophy in America. This is the first national tour to focus on Stickley’s work, with San Diego as its only West Coast stop.
The exhibit focuses mainly on furniture, but includes other mediums such as metalwork and textiles. Many of the pieces come from private collections and are on public display for the first time. A highlight of the exhibit is the recreation of Stickley’s model dining room from his 1903 Arts and Crafts Exhibition. San Diego has a special fondness for Stickley, as evidenced in the Craftsman Bungalows and Arts and Crafts homes of our uptown neighborhoods. George Marston was the San Diego distributor for Stickely, and the Marston House will be collaborating with the SDMA to display additional Stickley works. Gustav Stickley and the American Arts and Crafts Movement at the San Diego Museum of Art runs through September 11th.
