A slice of Olde England in Mission Hills

Written by Your Neighborhood Editor

Afternoon TeaYou are probably already familiar with Shakespeare’s Pub on India St as a favorite spot to watch sporting events or test your trivia skills, but have you discovered the hidden gem located just behind the pub? Shakespeare’s Corner Shoppe carries a huge assortment of foodstuffs and gift items from the UK as well as delicious homemade treats.

The Corner Shoppe is an important stop during holiday preparations at our house to pick up a Christmas pudding and the always-fun tradition of Christmas Crackers.  Their delicious sausage rolls are great to pick up for a quick and tasty snack, as are the pork pies and other baked delights.  Satisfy your sweet tooth with an extensive selection of cakes and candies, or discover a charming hostess gift for your next party.

My favorite part about the Corner Shoppe, has got to be their indulgent afternoon tea service.  After making a selection from the tea menu, tuck into a three-tier sweet and savory extravaganza complete with scones, cakes, and of course, loads of itty-bitty sandwiches with the crusts cut off. This delightful tea service can be experienced Thursday-Sunday afternoons, by advanced reservation.  So, next time you are grabbing a pint at Shakespeare’s Pub, be sure to leave some time to explore the Corner Shoppe as well.

Only place I know where you can buy Marmite. I dearly love the stuff. By itself on toast, it's an acquired but heavenly taste. If you make soups or casseroles, throw in a tablespoon of Marmite for a richer, fuller taste!

Great review of this quaint little shop. You have reminded me to try the tea service; I have been meaning to do it for a while. My favorite things about the shop: Curly Wurly and Turkish Delight sweets, treacle and PG Tips tea.
